Bluebirds

DA Bluebird Mash Recipe

For the DA Bluebird Feeder

Senior-crafted in Bella Vista, Arkansas, a Naturally Curious exclusive

This is the recipe my mother (the 'A' in DA Bluebird) uses to great success, she buys the least expensive ingredients she can find.  Scroll down for variations on this recipe.

DA Bluebird Mash

This will attract woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, titmouse and other birds besides bluebirds!

You may need to 'train' your local bluebirds to come to the feeder.

1 cup crunchy peanut butter 1 cup raisins
1 cup shortening 1/4 cup flour
1 cup sunflower seeds, shelled, unsalted 3-4 cups yellow cornmeal

Mix the raisins and flour until raisins are coated.
Mix peanut butter and shortening until well blended.

Mix in sunflower seeds and raisins.
Add 3 to 4 cups of yellow corn meal until the mixture is no longer sticky and is easy to work with.

Roll into mini-logs and fill in the holes on feeder.

Store in refrigerator.

Variations:

I've seen other bluebird mash (or suet) recipes that call for the following:

  • cutting the raisins in half
  • using organic, whole-wheat, unbleached flour and other organic ingredients
  • using lard rather than shortening
  • omitting the sunflowers
  • using other seed ('nut meats', peanut hearts) instead of or along with the sunflowers
