Grupo Ecologico Sierra Gorda Leaders in Texas

Hear their inspiring story, be a part of their success

Scott Weidensaul, author of Living on the Wind and Return to Wild America describes Grupo Ecologico Sierra Gorda (GESG) as one of the most impressive and charismatic environmental groups he’s met. Donors from around the world are supporting their environmental education and habitat preservation efforts. Foundations have awarded GESG co-founder Pati Ruiz Corzo’s 25 years of work as a leader in sustainable development, environmental education and as a social entrepreneur. Now is your chance to meet three of the leader of one of today’s most impressive grassroots conservation organizations, Grupo Ecologico Sierra Gorda, as they travel to McAllen and Austin in mid-February.

What began as one couple’s efforts to protect the cloud forests in the northern third of Queretaro State, Mexico (just south of El Cielo), has become a prizewinning Biosphere Reserve with:

  • A corps of environmental educators from the local communities
  • Technical staff working on reforestation projects (some funded by carbon sequestration payments) to both protect the cloud forest and provide a ready supply of firewood
  • A biological research team tracking jaguars and other endangered species
  • A community education program with solar ovens, solid waste management
  • A community economic development program focusing on alternatives for women (most of whom have husbands and/or fathers working in the U.S) including local enterprises in artisanias and regional products.
  • Sierra Gorda Ecotours, an official tour operator to guarantee top quality ecotourism guides, ecolodges (cabins, camping) and experiential activities including interpretive trails, mountain biking, typical foods, cultural experiences, and birding).
  • Centro Tierra Sierra Gorda (Sierra Gorda Earth Center) a training facility to help others benefit by learning the keys to success in conservation on a local and regional level. A series of workshops are offered so that others can benefit from what GESG has learned and achieved over the last twenty years. The courses and workshops share their practical experience and expertise.
  • Who’ll be here

  • Martha "Pati" Ruiz Corzo, Director of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve and the charismatic co-founder of the grassroots movement; winner of the 2002 Rolex Award for Enterprise and inducted as a Ashoka: Innovators for the Public Fellow.
  • Laura Pérez Arce, Outreach Coordinator of Grupo Ecologico Sierra Gorda (GESG), the founding local grassroots organization. Co-founder of Viva Sierra Gorda, www.vivasierragorda.org
  • Roberto Pedraza, Technical Assistant and head naturalist of GESG, birding expert and Pati’s son.
