What we say: |
|

Peterson Eastern/Central
|
The new Eastern version now combines the maps,
info and photos together, has field marks, Peterson a sentimental favorite.
Texas book not updated since 1968, no maps, limited color plates.

Golden Guide |
Sandy's first field book (more editions ago
than she'd care to admit to, though!), great color plates for troublesome
birds (fall warblers, sparrows etc.), only complaint is that the range maps
don't show state outlines. |

Nat'l Geo's Birds of NA 5th Edition |
Until Sibley, this was hands down all 'round
favorite. It's smaller size makes it a continued field favorite due to the
quality of the illustrations. |
 Stokes
(Eastern
and
Western) |
Like the color tabbed index, icons to show
birds that come to feeders, houses, information. Uses pictures, divides
Texas (and other states) in half. |

All the Birds (rev. 2003) |
Plates show habitat, groups some look alike
birds together, new binding makes it less durable in field. Although the
content is great, we're just not very enthusiastic about the new binding. |

Kaufman - flexibound
Spanish |
If you feel you must have photographs, this
is the best guide for you. If you've been dubious about the value of using
photos, this guide will assuage your fears. This is a great guide, it is
especially popular with people just getting started and folks looking for a
small book to carry into the field. Now available in
Spanish |

Sibley
Guide (flexibound) |
Most illustrations of all books (33 for
Red-tailed Hawk), some find the size daunting for carrying into the field.
Anyone hooked on birding, or just the beauty of birds will want this book on
their shelf (or car seat if not field bag!). |

Sibley Eastern
(Flexi)
|
I think these two books (Sibley Eastern and
Western) may become best sellers. There is more information than in the
full-blown Sibley, smartly divided pretty much along the Rocky Mountains
(Trans Pecos Texas not in this book), handy size, good price. What more
could anyone who likes painted illustrations want? |

Sibley Western (Flex) |

Audubon (Eastern, Western) |
Not crazy about trying to lump birds by color,
some photos don't show the birds' features well, but there are lots of
people who love this series and will not carry another guide. They are
probably the heartiest guides as they stay together through all kinds of
abuse! |

NWF
Birds of North America
|
This is the newest 'kid on the block.'
The use of captions on the photographs used for identification sets this
book apart from the other guides. |
