Naturally Curious about Texas?

Build your naturalist library with these Texas guides.

Texas Wide - These field guides cover all or most of Texas. Use the links to see the book, learn more.

(under construction, links will be added as these titles are entered in our new online store)

Butterflies   See Regional Books
Odonates

Dragonflies and Damselflies of Texas and the S.C. US

Although it's a bit large to carry into the field, it's the best there is for identifying odonates (and the only one for damselflies) in Texas and surrounding states.
Other Invertebrates
Common Texas Insects
Texas Spiders & Scorpions
Freshwater Mussels of TX
Fish
Freshwater Fish of Texas   Covers mostly game fish with some of the smaller 'bait' fish
Fishes of the Gulf of Mexico   Covers both game fish and fishes you might see while diving.
Snakes

Texas Snakes

This is a well written, encyclopedia reference, and is the basis for the upcoming (Nov. 05) Field Guide to Texas Snakes.

FG to Texas Snakes

A great book by Allan Tennant if you can find it!  We haven't been able to get any since 2003, and have not heard anything about when it may be available again.
Other Herps

Amphibians & Reptiles of TX, Dixon

Not a field guide, helpful for learning the ranges of all reptiles and amphibians in Texas.
Birds

Handbook of Texas Birds

Great for learning what birds are where in Texas and when.  Ranges mapped by county, color plates of specialty birds only, NOT a field guide, great for planning a trip, backing up field Guide
See also Regional Books, Bird Finding in Texas
Mammals

Mammals of Texas

The classic book on Texas mammals, updated with color plates and new range maps

Marine Mammals of the Gulf of Mexico

A hard cover guide, great for
Wildflowers
Texas Wildflowers   Arranged by flower color, so you can start using it the day you buy it
Wildflowers of Texas, Loughmiller   Arranged taxonomically (by family), so it'll help to study it so you'll spend less time thumbing through it looking at the pictures!  Foreward written by Lady Bird Johnson, portion of sales go to her Wildflower Research Center.
Trees
Texas Trees, A Friendly Guide   A long-time favorite, uses line drawings.
Trees of Texas, a Leaf ID Guide   This is the easiest to use, although not necessarily for carrying into the field.  There is a key to leaf shapes, then life-sized scans (black and white, but once you use it, you won't miss color plates) of the leaf, stem, fruit and flowers

Texas Trees

This is the only one with color pictures, written by Benny Simpson.  Most of this information is now available on line through the Texas Cooperative Extension Service.
Other Plants
Common Trees, Shrubs and Wildflowers of Texas   Uses color plates, has a little bit of each category, enough to get someone interested, but once they are hooked, you'll be buying separate books for trees and wildflowers!
Grasses of Texas   All the grasses, line drawings, by Gould
Common Texas Grasses   A subset of Grasses of Texas
Texas Range Plants   Contains both grasses and herbs found on Texas rangelands.
Texas Mushrooms   Uses color photos.
Wild Orchids of Texas   Uses color photos
Manual of the Vascular Plants of Texas, Correll & Johnston   All keys, nothing but keys.  On the desks of serious botanists in Texas and elsewhere.  Although the taxonomy is out of date, unless your area has been covered by the new BRIT Guides (North Central Texas and East Texas), this is your best resource.
